The Past is Future is Present
There has been some news lately featuring the partnership between the Southport Historical Society and Up Your Arts on a project we’re calling, “Southport, Open Your Doors!”. We see it as a way to celebrate our collective well-being and community health after surviving this past year of pandemic shock. The project began in April with a call for local artists to submit designs to embellish one of 19 interior doors donated from the historic Harper home on Bay Street. Open doors seemed the perfect metaphor for the emergence we are now experiencing. All the members of our town spent a year learning anew how valuable our history is and how intrinsically linked it is to our future – it’s now time to step through our doors and greet what awaits. Twelve finalists selected by a blind jury process will be announced next week to take the project forward. The artists will have all summer to finish their artwork using one of the doors as their canvas. In the fall, a community dinner is planned to send the doors on parade, so to speak, at twelve retail establishments around town, then to another set of installations in the lobbies of non-profit organizations. The whole campaign will culminate in March with a fundraising gala to auction off the doors to lucky new owners. Stay tuned for more details!
