“Southport, Open Your Doors” Arts Project Finalists Chosen

The Southport Historical Society and Up Your Arts are pleased to announce the selection of ten solo artists and two collaborating teams as finalists for their joint project, "Southport, Open Your Doors."

“Southport, Open Your Doors” Arts Project Finalists Chosen

The two organizations launched a campaign in April to celebrate the Southport community’s emergence from the pandemic with an artistic extravaganza repurposing donated interior doors from the historic Harper home on Bay Street into works of art. Artists were chosen through a blind jury process that ended June 14.

The artists working alone are Kianna Bearden, Alora Boerner, Harry Burrell, Lori Guidi, Ginger Hedblom, Mary Beth Livers, Donna Parisi, Austin Sapp, Rosemary Wagner, and Chris Wallace. The two teams include a duo, Nancy Cray and Lynn Gillis; and a trio, Dan DeGroat, Gia Holmes, and Colleen Phillips.

Inspired by poet Maya Angelou, the artists have been chosen to decorate a specific door to represent their vision of her statement about moving forward: “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour and some style.”

The artists will work all summer to embellish the doors using mediums as varied as the sketches they turned in to the jury judge. After being shown altogether at a community dinner in the fall, the doors will then be displayed individually in retail establishments throughout Southport during November and December and in the public offices of non-profit organizations in January and February.

The campaign will culminate in a gala event next spring to bring the doors together again, celebrate their collective message, and auction them to support the Southport Historical Society’s stewardship of the Old Brunswick County Jail and Up Your Arts’ efforts to turn the Old Brunswick County Courthouse into a community-based center for creative and performing arts.
