The doors at the heart of the “Southport, Open Your Doors!” project by Up Your Arts recently went on tour again after being displayed last fall at downtown retail stores. They are publicly accessible and located in 11 different offices throughout the downtown area.
For the next two months, the doors can be viewed during normal business hours at Artisans Gallery on Howe, Brunswick Community College Southport Center, Fort Johnston Visitor Center, Harper Library, New Hope Clinic, NC Maritime Museum, South Brunswick Middle School, Southport City Hall, Southport Elementary School, Southport Senior Center, and The State Port Pilot.
“Southport, Open Your Doors!” is an Up Your Arts’ fundraising initiative that asked local artists to reimagine a set of vintage doors donated to the Southport Historical Society from the home of the late Jim and Margaret Harper on Bay Street.
Selected artists used the wood and glass interior doors as a canvas to bring their creative ideas to life over the summer.
The artists are Alora Boerner, Harry Burrell, Lori Guidi, Ginger Hedblom, Mary Beth LivLivers, Donna Parisi, Austin Sapp, Rosemary Wagner, Chris Wallace and collaborating teams Nancy Cray and Lynn Gillis, and the trio of Dave DeGroat, Gia Holmes, and Colleen Phillips.
The artists were introduced and their doors unveiled during an October reception and afterward, the doors went to 11 retail stores, whose sponsorship made possible the payment of a materials stipend for each door. The artists donated their time and received no other recompense.
This part of the tour paired individual donors with each of the doors, and Up Your Arts appreciates the Southport Historical Society and Catherine Beacham, Harry and Barbara Burrell, Kathy and Larry Cabral, Robert and Michelle Carroll, Joyce DeSantis, Eric and Barbara Lappala, Sharon and Jim Lightbourne, Jon and Debra McLendon, Tammy Price, Diana Setaro, and Elizabeth Vetter.
The project concludes when the doors are sold at auction during a formal gala in March. More information is available at https://www.upyourarts.org/southport-art-spaces/opendoors/.
